13th Floor Haunted House Reaches New Levels Of Fear!

Triskaidekaphobia is the irrational fear of the number 13, a superstition related to paraskevidekatriaphobia, a specific fear of Friday the 13th. Its origins are unclear, tracing back as far as ancient Persia, the Last Supper, and Viking mythology. Wherever it actually began, the fear of the number 13 has far-reaching tentacles, causing architects to eliminate the thirteenth floor in buildings, people to avoid scheduling special events on the thirteenth day of the month, and a particular horse stall in Santa Anita Park to be renumbered 12A, in an effort to avoid the number 13… sequentially, they read as 11, 12, 12A, 14. In fact, the Otis Elevators company estimates that 85% of the buildings which utilize their elevators do not have a named 13th floor!

In an effort to defuse this superstition, an influential group of New Yorkers established the Thirteen Club in 1881. The first meeting took place on Friday, January13, 1881 at 8:13 p.m. Thirteen people sat down to dine in room 13 of the venue, entered the room by walking under a ladder, and were seated among piles of spilled salt. Reportedly, all of the guests survived. For the next forty years they met in Thirteen Clubs all across North America, with members that included future United States Presidents Chester A. Arthur and Theodore Roosevelt. Eventually the clubs died out, but the fear surrounding the number 13 is just as strong in some today as it was in Babylonian times…
